Job - Mechanical design engineer
Salary - £45,000 - £50,000
Location - Wimborne, Dorset
You will deliver technical solutions and oversee complex projects from design to production, creating manufacturing designs that optimize cost, quality, and delivery. You will also assist the Principal Engineer in fostering innovations and ensuring effective communication across business sectors.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate with Sales, Engineering, and manufacturing teams to ensure product designs are functional and manufacturable before releasing drawings.
- Enhance skills to address technical issues like back pressure, acoustics, and vibration.
- Oversee new Product Development from concept to manufacturing, including design alternatives, cost assessments, prototyping, and testing.
- Resolve technical issues at customer locations.
- Deliver technical designs and manufacturing drawings that meet cost, quality, and delivery standards.
- Actively participate in new product initiatives using the stage and gate process.
- Explore innovations and eco-friendly concepts within existing product lines.
- Work with Sales and Design Engineering on complex inquiries to identify cost-effective manufacturing solutions and provide accurate cost estimates.
- Lead process and quality improvement activities, including root cause analysis and the 5 Whys technique.
- Communicate with departments, customers, suppliers, and service providers, including site visits.
- Ensure compliance with Health & Safety regulations and company policies
Skills and Attributes
- Independent worker with minimal oversight.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong leadership, organizational, and analytical problem-solving abilities.
- Proficient in multitasking and project management.
- Collaborative team player across functions.
- Confident in making informed decisions.
Qualifications and Experience
- Graduate-level engineering degree.
- Preferred experience in composites, metal fabrication, and rubber hose production.
- Knowledge of thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, acoustics, and vibration is a plus.
- Proficient in AutoCAD and/or Inventor for product and process design.
- Familiar with FMEA, stage-gate processes, and continuous improvement methodologies.
- High levels of technical expertise, creativity, and innovation.
